As part of the supported programme of International Festival of Visual Art 2010, we are delighted to present work by the Scottish based artist group GANGHUT.

‘GANGHUT at Southside Studios’

is commissioned by Southside Studios Gallery in association with Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2010

GANGHUT is developing a site specific structure(s) that will inhabit/take over the South Side Studios location as well as a new film. As usual GANGHUT will be referencing the notion of a GANGHUT, public and private space and notions of architecture, control and access. GANGHUT’s musical leg, GANGBAND, will develop a musical performance as well for the South Side Studios. GANGBAND will be performing at the closing party.

Scottish based GANGHUT is a playful, strong bonded, limitless, ambitious, self critical group of artists. The group's dynamic approach to making art is best suited to achieve site-specific socially engaged artistic interactions at the Southside Studios (Govanhill).

Residua.

A process occurs. Whether physical or temporal, only fragments remain. An interest in preserving and investigating this residue binds the work of the three artists in Residua.

Richard Blass makes oil paintings based on photographs accumulated over the course of his life. These paintings are investigations, reinterpretations, and reinventions of his personal history.
Three works are shown here. Ripples transforms a photo of a small man-made pond into a play of light and surface. Battle for… is based on a black-and-white image of a battle scene from WW2. Cabbage (Mother) is from a recent photograph of a red cabbage. This subject is used to re-investigate his own cultural heritage.

Lyndsey Macleod makes objects that bear witness. Casting is used as a tool for cementing the ephemeral, making a transient object permanent.
Plegia began with a wooden construction of a house. This structure was placed in a fire and retrieved before it was consumed. The remains were cast in iron dust and resin.
93C presents magpie wings that were placed in chlorine until the barbules dissolved. The title of the piece corresponds with the temperature at which they dissolve. The structure of the wings is then revealed and displayed alongside the solution.

John Robertson’s works are gleaned from a research trip to Vienna.
Freud runs away references Sigmund Freud’s agoraphobia. The work documents a re-enactment of Sigmund Freud’s daily walks around the Ringstrasse and sees the artist retracing his steps, drawing a zero on the map of Vienna. This film is accompanied by two clepsydra, mediaeval vacuum experiments that purport to prove nature’s abhorrence of the vacuum.
Ludwig Boltzmann, a Viennese physicist, killed himself in Duino. But lovers are taken back by exhausted nature consists of paintings of Duino’s two castles on pendulums and a painting of his grave set into a copy of Rainer Maria Rilke’s ‘Duino Elegies’. The title is quoted from these works.

There was much of the beautiful, much of the wanton,
much of the bizarre, something of the terrible,
and not a little of that which might have excited disgust

from The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe.

It is this friction between the poetics of the abject and the direct visceral responses of our physiology that informs this new work by Cheryl Field. Exploring material properties that evoke the bodily to provide an encounter between the writhing forms and their audience, she invites us to question the potential for manipulation in the complex territory between object and viewer. Laden with connotations of the corporeal, the installation attempts to draw us into our own physical and psychological apparatus, mapping the disparities highlighted by the work between disgust and attraction, what is apparent and the intricate, veiled processes that lead us to form our response to what is presented.

"Manky Bastards" is an attempt by Michael Farquhar to create an art event by trailing around the bars of Manchester and asking anyone he meets that creates to participate in an art show in Glasgow, as much an excuse for a piss up as an art show..,
i spent two months asking friends, work colleagues and randoms that i met in bars and party's in Manchester if they wanted to participate in an art show. this is the result.. as much a party, networking opportunity and experiment as it is an art show.

The Tension between the painting as an object and of its illusionary qualities have always fascinated me. The surface of a piece should have just as much interest as the statement of the work. The more the viewer has to pull from, the more angles you approach a piece the more substance- physically and artistic, are key for the progress of what a work can hold within. The scenarios are like quick snap shots of a full story that can be taken to have a full narrative. Yet I will never be the one to tell you what the work is about- it takes something away from you-the viewing public. It bashes your ideas. And that is just wrong AMM
